Description

The passage of the distinguished American writer and Nobel Prize laureate Ernest Hemingway through the city of Tortosa in 1938, during the Spanish Civil War, is the central theme of the "Hemingway in Tortosa" tour.

This tour aims to highlight the city's connection with this world-renowned writer, the most famous among the dozens of foreign journalists who covered the Civil War.

It is a walking tour that begins at the air-raid shelter and ends at the old railway bridge over the Ebro, where the traces of the conflict are still visible. The tour visits several points in the Ensanche and historic center and focuses on two aspects. On one hand, it tells the biographical profile of the writer, his work as a correspondent during the Civil War, the chronicles of the bombings on Tortosa he wrote in April 1938, and his traveling companions, well-known journalists such as Herbert Matthews (The New York Times), photojournalist Robert Capa, or journalist and Hemingway's lover, Martha Gellhorn.
