Description

The Museum of Tortosa (the ancient slaughterhouse) and the modernist buildings have been chosen by popular vote as one of the 7 Treasures of the Cultural Heritage of Tortosa, in the context of the celebration Tortosa Capital of Catalan Culture in 2021.

The Museum of Tortosa is home to some of the city’s century-old archive and museum collection that was formerly kept at the Sant Domènec church. Its current site used to be the municipal abattoir, which is a key highlight of Tortosa’s Art Nouveau heritage and of great architectural value. We could say that the wrapping is as precious as the gift of which it also forms part.

Built in 1908, the site is formed by a complex of pavilions that are structured symmetrically within a rectangular enclosure. With foundations of pillars and arches, the construction stands on the old riverbed. The colourful exterior, which is predominated by bare brick and glazed tiles, has an appearance that harks back to the Mudéjar period of which the architect Pau Monguió was such an enthusiast.

The main central building of the entire complex houses the exhibition space, which goes through the different historical periods of the city and the immediate surroundings in chronological order, with a pedagogical explanation, spread over six themed areas on the ground floor and a mezzanine level. The material exhibited showcases the key events of the city’s history.

The other smaller pavilions contain an exhibition hall for museum displays and the city’s visual arts centre.
