Description
The old potteries are located in the town's Jewish ghetto, on the Carrer Major de Remolins. Tortosa, and specifically the Remolins neighbourhood, was historically and traditionally, until the mid-20th century, an important centre of Catalan pottery manufacture.
Pottery was essential for everyday activities, as it was used to make all kinds of containers for domestic use; it was an eminently practical trade, but not without beauty in its simplicity.
Based on Arabic tradition, its manufacture centred on containers for domestic and agricultural use, though little is known of it. Some of the pieces of which the origin and source have been identified with certainty are measures for wine. The reason for this is that these containers had to bear a seal to guarantee their contents.
The crest of Tortosa appears on many pieces. They were made in quarter and half measures in the shape of a small cylindrical jar. The largest were rounded, with a wide neck and a fat body, and they were all glazed in a honey colour.
River traffic on the Ebro and the trade in goods between the localities beside it certainly encouraged exports.
The pottery workshops usually occupied the ground floor of the building, while the upper floor was living space.
